It’s fun to catch a wave, especially one that comes all the way from Iceland! Kaleo, the skyrocketing indie-rock band from near Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavik ironically takes its name from a native Hawaiian word that means “the sound.” Inspired by American blues and folk, the band relocated to Austin, Texas, in 2015 after becoming a sensation in its homeland.
The single “All the Pretty Girls” released in 2014 helped propel Kaleo to international fame. The song has been streamed over 23 million times on Spotify. The band has appeared on American late-night television shows including Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Late Night with Seth Meyers. Kaleo’s songs have played on popular television series such as Grey’s Anatomy, Empire, Orange is the New Black, Supergirl, Blindspot, Vinyl, and The Leftovers.
Last year Rolling Stone magazine named Kaleo first in a listing of “10 New Artists You Need to Know.” The article highlighted the “dark and spooky ballad “Way Down We Go” from the band’s first album on Atlantic Records, which it performed deep inside an Icelandic volcano!
