NCMA and Cat's Cradle Present
John Butler Trio+
with Trevor Hall
The John Butler Trio is an Australian roots-rock band led by the American-born guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter John Butler. The group broke through in 2004 with the platinum-selling Sunrise Over Sea.
A British music critic calls the trio’s recent release Home its “best album yet … Lyrically, it is stripped down to rock ‘n’ roll poetry.” Butler himself says, “Throughout the years that it took to make this album, there were tears and frustration, confusion, and chaos. What you’re hearing is the destination, but getting here felt like an odyssey—some rite of passage that I couldn’t go around, couldn’t go over, and couldn’t go under. I had to go through.”
Once considered the continent’s leading jam band, the trio has broadened its musical palette in recent years. AllMusic notes, “While facets of alt-rock began seeping into the mix on 2010’s acclaimed April Uprising, and 2018’s Home saw the group incorporating some electronic elements, JBT have never lost their knack for pairing deft musicality with addictive yet off-center grooves.”
Singer-songwriter Trevor Hall opens. Hall’s music, a blend of roots, reggae, and folk, reflects a deep love of Eastern mysticism. He has toured with Steel Pulse, Ziggy Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Matisyahu, Michael Franti, and Xavier Rudd.
