Michael Shannon & Jason Narducy and Friends are excited to announce a spring 2027 North American tour celebrating the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.’s, Document. After the pair’s enthusiastically received run earlier this year honoring R.E.M.’s landmark 1986 album, Lifes Rich Pageant, which saw Mike Mills & Peter Buck join in at the band’s two shows in Athens along with Michael Stipe joining to sing two songs at the Brooklyn show, the extensive Document tour will take Shannon & Narducy to stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Chicago, Brooklyn, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and more. For the first time, Shannon & Narducy will bring their live show to Vancouver, Madison, Nashville, Asheville, plus they’ll return for two shows in R.E.M.’s hometown of Athens, GA.
Kicking off Wednesday, February 3rd at Summit in Denver, CO, the tour will see Shannon & Narducy—alongside Jon Wurster (drums), John Stirratt (bass), Dag Juhlin (guitar), and Vijay Tellis-Nayak (keyboards)—playing Document in full each night in addition to many other beloved R.E.M. classics.
Shannon, an award winning and acclaimed actor/director/musician, and Narducy (Bob Mould Band, Superchunk, Sunny Day Real Estate, Verböten, Split Single) have been collaborating for the last thirteen years, playing entire albums by some of their favorite artists such as Neil Young, The Modern Lovers, Bob Dylan, The Smiths, and T. Rex at various Chicago clubs. After a successful show in July 2023 at Chicago’s Metro honoring the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.’s Murmur, which included a guest appearance from R.E.M.’s own Mike Mills, what was initially planned as a one-off performance evolved into the pair’s first-ever tour. In the years since, Shannon & Narducy have toured celebrating R.E.M.’s 1985 album, Fables of the Reconstruction, and 1986’s Lifes Rich Pageant.
On Document, Shannon says: “This is the album that introduced me to the band. If you had told me when I was a kid that some day I’d get up on stage and perform it, I wouldn’t be able to comprehend, probably even believe, that…Feels like it was recorded yesterday to address the calamity of tomorrow…a pinnacle of songwriting and craftsmanship unseen beforehand and unmatched…that is until the next R.E.M. record, as always.”
Narducy adds: “When I was sixteen, my friends and I drove from Evanston to Madison—probably looking for trouble. I walked into a record store and saw a new R.E.M. album on display. It was the first R.E.M. record I purchased. The first song was ‘Finest Worksong’ and I felt deeply connected to the music, the lyrics, the energy. I cannot wait to join the band to play these songs.”
Before the Document tour kicks off, Narducy will release his second book, Mostly The Van (Volume Two), this fall on November 17th. Following last year’s acclaimed first volume, Volume Two finds Narducy further exploring the awkward, embarrassing, and sometimes glorious experiences of his life as a working musician. Whether he’s recounting the terror of singing the National Anthem at a sold out Chicago Bulls game, witnessing a motorcyclist on fire in Paris while on tour, performing with his band at the Pizzagate restaurant, or outsmarting a police officer that tried to embarrass him on a frozen lagoon, Narducy utilizes wit and self-deprecation to describe a compelling life as a not-famous creative.
